Don't Hire an Electrician Without Checking This

When it comes to getting electrical work done, you need an electrician that is properly qualified. It is important not to be fooled by contractors that know all the right things to say.

Even if they are listed with the Better Business Bureau, you still need to check that they have a valid electricians license. If they do not, and they make a mess of the job, you will be on your own when it comes to complaints and will have to file a civil action.

You will have to slog the matter out in court, and, while you might win in the end, it is going to take a while and cost a fair amount of money. You will have to get in a properly licensed contractor in the meantime to fix up the mess.

And, depending on how badly the first guy did the job, this could end up costing you more than you paid in the first place.

But The Price Is Right

Sure, an unlicensed contractor is bound to charge less to do the job. Maybe you checked them out, or they have been recommended by someone you trust. Maybe they do good work, but you still should not take the chance. Let's examine why below.

Potential Code Violations

How up to date is the electrician when it comes to building codes? If a building inspector were to come around, would the work be up to code or not? If not, you could face penalties and will have to get the work done again anyway.

It Might Affect Your Insurance

Worse still, if something goes wrong down the line, like your house burning down, and the insurance finds out that the contractor was not licensed, or work to code, they might have a reason to decline your claim. That would mean financial distress or even bankruptcy for your office, restaurant, warehouse, or company facility.

What Other Shortcuts Are They Taking?

You have to wonder why they haven't bothered to become licensed. It's a pretty common requirement for most businesses to use licensed contractors, so it makes good business sense to get your license.

If they are taking shortcuts in this critical area, where else might, they also be slacking off?

Why Don’t They Have A License?

Maybe it is because they have never bothered to apply for one. Or maybe it is because they didn’t meet the requirements. Or maybe their license was rescinded. There really is no good reason for them not to have this complete, is there?

Now, there is no guarantee that a licensed electrician will do a good job for your business. But it is a step in the right direction. It is a way of covering your butt as well – further down the line, if something goes wrong, you can lodge a formal complaint with the licensing bureau.

That could have a lot more impact when it comes to getting an electrician to fix their mistakes than simply threatening to sue them.

At the end of the day, you want the best possible assurance that the job will be done properly. Don’t deal with an unlicensed electrical contractor and save yourself a lot of hassle.
