Dangers Of Blue Light In Electronic Devices

blue light dangers eye health sleep disruption

We live in a world filled with digital screens. Think of how much time you spend in front of LED televisions, tablets, computers, and the omnipresent smartphone. It's all around you and staring you in the face from first thing in the morning to your final minutes before bed. Digital screens powered by LED lights are becoming an unavoidable part of everyday life and we all know that it probably isn't great for our health. But not many of us know exactly why it can be a problem. While there are several reasons and hypothesis as to why all of these digital devices can be detrimental to our health, there is at least one proven reason: blue light.

Blue Light Basics

Blue light is a range of the visible light spectrum, defined as having a wavelength between 400−495 nanometers. This short wavelength means that blue light is a type of high-energy visible light, defined as having a wavelength between 400 and 450 nanometers. Blue light from the sun (and from some light bulbs or lighting fixtures to a lesser extent) can actually be beneficial to your health in normal amounts. But the blue light commonly found from the screens in our smartphones, computers, televisions, and tablets can can major damage to our eyes and severely disrupt our sleeping habits.

Eye Health Issues

Checking your smartphone at night or being exposed to too many screens throughout the day can cause permanent damage to your eyes. It can cause or accelerate macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of vision impairment in the developed world. Macular degeneration from blue light emitted from smartphones can lead to expensive trips to medical professionals, or at the very least more glasses or contact lenses. You can check contact lenses UK for quality lenses with blue light technology. You certainly don't want to waste additional time and money when you're trying to bootstrap a business or take a company's marketing to the next level..

Sleep Disruption

Blue light can also seriously impact your sleeping habits. I've written before about the importance of sleep for success in business. It's really just common sense in today's day and age with the market being more competitive than ever before.

The overall health benefits of sleeping are also well established. But when you reach for your phone or tablet and are exposed to blue light before going to bed, your brain mistakes it for the light of the sun and keeps your mind active and anxious. This causes you to have difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep, which in turn causes other health related issues. These health issues and chemical imbalances lead to more sleepless nights and the vicious cycle continues.

Prevention Solutions

Luckily there are several options that can help to protect your eyes, sleep, and general health. There are high quality blue light screen filter products available that can cover your iPhone, iPhones, Samsung Android smartphones, Macbooks, laptops, and computers. There are even blue light reducing LED lamps and clip-on glasses to filter additional blue light. You can also work with night mode settings on your smart phones, change brightness levels, or just try to minimize the use of digital screens at night in general.

The Bottom Line On Blue Light Risks In Today's Technology

As a marketing manager and blogger that works 60+ hours every week (and enjoys watching movies and television shows as well on multiple devices), I will definitely be investing in blue light screen filters to help keep me protected. I already wear glasses most of the day and my difficulty sleeping has been an ongoing problem. It's time for me to make a positive change. I think you should too and protect your beautiful eyes from bluelight.
