When you made a list of the pros and cons of becoming an entrepreneur, you probably wrote the words, “Able to vacation more,” in bright red. The presumed lifestyle that comes with being your own boss is one of the most attractive parts of starting your own business. However, you may find the reality is slightly different when the time comes because you can’t possibly hope to relax while away if you are constantly worrying about whether your business will survive while you’re out of town.
To help you with this, we have pulled together a list of top tips to keep your business running smoothly while you’re on vacation. Now go and put your feet up, sip on as many Pina Coladas or smoothies as you like and let the world’s worries disappear.
Get Ahead Before You Leave
The best thing you can do to stop you worrying about work while away is to get as much as you can do before your scheduled flight. We’re not just talking about work that you may have had to do anyway, but trying to leave as little extra work for your subordinates as possible too. It is a matter of efficiency. As a business leader, your duties tend to be things you don’t trust others to do, so get them done yourself and you will have a lot less to stress about.
Know The Problem Areas
Every business has things it is great at and things that it needs to iron out. To make sure you aren’t constantly fretting while away, you may want to address the problem areas - and possibly problematic areas - of your business first. If your operation runs on collaboration, then the thought of your network going down while you’re away probably sends a shiver down your spine. Address this early by bringing on an IT support company like Office Tek. If you’re concerned about a supplier letting you down because of rumors about their finances, then make sure you have options lined up before you leave. It is about being proactive early and not reactive when you’re away.
You Don’t Have To Unplug
You probably started your business because you had some sort of interest in it beforehand. It probably isn’t work to you. You enjoy it. Luckily, you don’t have to unplug completely just because you’re going away. In fact, trying to unplug while also being desperate to check your emails every twenty minutes is going to stress you out more. Instead, set aside a couple of hours each morning to make sure everything's running smoothly. It could be that this two-hours lets you relax for the next two days.
Don’t Be An Indispensable Cog
If your business really can’t operate without you then you’re never going to be able to relax. It could be that clients only do business with you or your signature is required on everything or whatever. If this is the case, then you need to train and organize those around you to be competent. You need everyone in your team to be dispensable - including you. Only then will you really trust your team enough to relax.
I hope you enjoyed this article about how to make sure that your business runs smoothly while you're away on vacation or travelling.
